Conscious and Subconscious

ConsciousnessBefore we get started with emotions, I need to explain how the conscious and subconscious mind works. What matters to us is that the conscious mind can handle few bits of information per second as opposite as the subconscious mind that basically contains our entire beliefs system. Many studies have shown that decisions are made in the subconscious mind before it reaches the conscious mind. For example, you might have been taught that money doesn’t grow in trees, so every time you find something that you really like and even having the opportunity and the money to buy it, you hear an inner voice saying that it is too expensive, or you shouldn’t spend your money on this because it was hard to make, etc. Does this sound familiar?

This inner voice is coming from your subconscious programming. What is happening is that our thoughts (the inner voice which never stops talking), are constantly and randomly replaying, and most of the times the decisions we make at any given situation are just coming from the subconscious instead of the consciousness or awareness of the moment. For example, we all know that smoking isn’t the best for our health, but instead of being aware of this at the moment we want to smoke, we just act according to our programming, that is basically saying that we will release all the stress and tension of the moment by smoking a cigarette!

Our thoughts have become compulsive because the subconscious is more powerful than the conscious mind. As we have identified ourselves with the programing in the subconscious mind, it makes it hard to imagine that we can go beyond the thoughts consciously and change anything we want. At this moment all our attention is on the subconscious. However, with practice we can start giving more awareness to the emotions in our body, allowing us to stay more time in the present moment and also to become more conscious about our thoughts and habits.
